MY MOVIE JOURNAL : THE BEST MOVIES OF 2016
Having one of their golden achievements, the best years with improving themes and results, bahkan tak sulit rasanya kalau harus membuat list top 10 terpisah hanya dari sinema mereka.
And so, list ini tak semata berdasar personal likes, but more than that, film-film dengan inovasi dalam konsep, konten serta cinematic experience-nya. And instead of notes, I put my capsule reviews on my social media account (@danieldokter) or the part of my reviews at danieldokter.com on each choice. With just a few hours left before the calendar turns to 2017, here’s a look back at this year’s finest movies. Agree or not, please leave your comments. Happy New Year, and enjoy!
1. LA LA LAND
A love letter to Tinseltown, a homage to Jazz, a tribute to Love and Dreamers, #LaLaLand will dance your heart out! Irresistibly glorious and seductive! Just when we thought we couldn’t get Hollywood musical classics like ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ in this era, #LaLaLand comes along just like a perfect one. With every inch that defines magic, What a feeling!
2. SING STREET
Playful, waggish yet symphonic, #SingStreet will definitely pop your hearts out beyond Carney’s skillful ways to translate music on screen. From Back to the Future, Footloose, John Hughes and many, many more, #SingStreet is the 80s dope!
In the most heartful & thoughtful ways, #AMonsterCalls tore you in pieces just to pull you stronger. A kind of film that helps you make it through. The ultimate therapy in dealing with the loss of your loved ones, and resonate long to your very soul.
4. YOUR NAME. ( KIMI NO NA WA. )
Combining rare case of romance fantasy with catastrophical scifi background in one incredibly cute anime, #YourName comes with amazing details to tell the complicated plot without ever losing the emotional core. It’s a blend you’ve never seen before in the genre.
From language to space-time continuum, love and loss, birth and death, yang melekat di benak kita pada akhirnya bukan lagi soal extraterrestrial encounters atau global warfare, tapi lebih ke sebuah perenungan panjang tentang kehidupan. How to embrace life’s every moment. #Arrival
Like Zoology class & Kidzania kind of self learning experience disguised as a cop thriller, #Zootopia tackled the balance in the name of fun.
Finally after quite a while, #FindingDory brought Pixar back home. The one with all hearts, visuals and fun – without trying to look any smarter. Unforgettable!
#Storks might have super awkward plot and lunatic humors, but easily stole your heart, it’s super irresistible and adorably delivers! With jumped off the seats laugh, many times, the cutest animated movie this year, too!
Having multi-layered plot and tons of characters doesn’t stop #TheSecretLifeOfPets from being so exciting and all-ages fun throughout!
People win, people lose. Love stays. Based on a moving true story, Jeff Nichols’ #Loving is one of the most beautiful love story ever told. Affecting and heart-rending without ever being flashy or manipulative, it transcends us to our deepest parts of the heart.
Mishmash of Kurosawa, Chang Cheh to Sergio Leone over allegories of justice and integrity, #CallOfHeroes strikes with hard hitting – heart pounding actions. It evoked The Magnificent Seven’s hearts way better than Fuqua’s remake.
Sincerely paid its tribute to one of India’s bravest daughters – and Rajesh Khanna, too, #Neerja is an emotionally intense ride of courage. #Neerja also featured Sonam Kapoor’s finest performance. And Shabana Azmi is still glorious after her lifelong span of acting career. Dalam sebuah hijacking biopic, #Neerja bisa bicara begitu lantang soal feminism spirit sampai problem-problem sosial perempuan India. Luarbiasa.
Did what The Accused do in the late ‘80s US but shaping it closer to their society – and might be ours, #Pink is not just powerfully made, it shouts out loud about gender dichotomy in the ways that could leave you choked. One of the most important Hindi film in years.
Played over ‘80s Bolly-homage and cliché twist just to layered the bigger idea, #AeDilHaiMushkil still show Karan Johar’s matchless ways in the genre.
Alia Bhatt’s tour de force performance with sweet disposition by Shah Rukh Khan, #DearZindagi is a soulful love letter to life.
Like crimes of the heart, every bit of #Befikre ; chemistry, music, atmospheres, is a sheer-out-loud fun to fall in love with. Like nowadays Bollywood trends, #Befikre also plays with tributes; from Disco Dancer, raja Hindustani and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
Raises thought-provoking issues of gender, parenting, women’s and nation’s empowerment over a father to daughters journey in one grand sports biopic, #Dangal will grip you tight and win your heart! At the core of it, a riveting performance from Fatima Sana Shaikh & Aamir Khan, who keeps testing his limits as a Bollywood auteur.
10. TRAIN TO BUSAN
Just when we thought a zombie fest couldn’t go nowhere far, #TrainToBusan comes with a solid package, one that defines the true power of K-Cinema.
11. UNDER THE SHADOW
#UnderTheShadow ultimately defines a new breed of Iranian horror with fears from many aspects of being a woman struggling through their country’s history. Biar wujudnya horor, yang kita lihat adalah distinct style film-film Iran biasanya – yang selalu vokal kala bicara gender dan emansipasi.
Over a weird plot in #CaptainFantastic , Matt Ross could perfectly pull loads of heartstrings to one thought-provoking idea of child education.
13. THE MERMAID
The best thing about #TheMermaid is Stephen Chow really knows when to become serious or go all the way with his ‘Mo Lei Tau’ comedy and action, but still could deliver the movie’s important message smoothly. Like #JourneyToTheWest #ConqueringTheDemons , without having to appear on screen, Chow can put his special signature all over it. Not too many comedy movies could make you jump off your seat laughing. #TheMermaid is obviously one of those rare ones. Hilarious!
The action sure is A thing, but lies beyond, #CaptainAmericaCivilWar is an ultimate lesson on how you get the superhero genre elements done right. A really strong setup to Marvel’s next phase with more superheroes to join.
Sets a new bar for superhero movie and extreme romance, like listening to ‘80s / Oldies Golden Love Songs album – contains George Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’, Chicago’s ‘You’re the Inspiration’ and even Mohammed Rafi’s ‘Tumse Accha Kaun Hai’, drunk while talking to the wall, #Deadpool is Wham!Bam! funny and hilarious!
16. DOCTOR STRANGE
East meets west, ancient vs modern, #DoctorStrange seems like Marvel’s hardest challenge – yet they nailed it like a hip and fun spectacle!
17. THE HANDMAIDEN
Like ‘Stoker’ meets ‘Flower & Snake’, #Agassi a.k.a. #TheHandmaiden is a lavish, gorgeous, weirdly sensual & terrifying masterpiece – Chan Wook’s style.
Return to form with his best energy – perverted and disturbing, Verhoeven drove #Elle unlike anything you’ve ever seen in movies with same subjects. Portraying deeply psychological aspects, he also made 63 y.o. Isabelle Huppert looks perfectly in shape and convincing in one of her best performances.
19. HACKSAW RIDGE
Some faith just can’t be broken. Hide its preach beyond a gripping ride in #HacksawRidge , works like a miracle, Gibson made us believe and couldn’t say no. All it takes to tell the true story like this is a good preacher, and Gibson is a damn good one.
Choose not to play typical thrills in the journalism thriller genre, #Spotlight moves deep to deliver thought-provoking subtexts of journalism against the order of society. Ada pengaturan karakter, akting dan tempo yang sangat berbeda, namun baik sekali dalam skrip dan penyutradaraan #Spotlight . One of the rare case of movies that should be watched only in theatres to get all the essence.
21. DON’T BREATHE
We live in the golden era of innovative horror. Welcoming the new Movie Maniacs named The Blindman, from home invasion thrillers to Cujo, #DontBreathe is a relentlessly crafted heart-stopping fest. A beast!
22. KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
Not only the visual marvel, #KuboAndTheTwoStrings also had tons of hearts in one exciting animated action-fantasy.
23. THE WAILING
Like a devil lurking slowly beneath your darkest fear, Na Hong-jin’s #TheWailing a.k.a. #Goksung is one of the most gripping and disturbing psychological horror I’ve seen in years.
24. OUR LITTLE SISTER
Goes slow and almost unpolished yet irresistibly intimate like other Hirokazu Koreeda’s, only much sweeter and prettier, #OurLittleSister is a splendid and charming aftermath family tale.
25. 45 YEARS
Though looks common on the outside, in its deepest veins, #45Years is an ultimate reminder of one’s life’s greatest journey. Love. A powerhouse and visceral duet by Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling. (dan)
