Dengan jumlah total penonton film Indonesia yang meningkat terus hingga mencapai 50 juta penonton di tahun ini – serta ada 14 film yang melewati angka penonton lebih dari 1 juta, artinya film Indonesia jelas tengah berada dalam momentum terbaiknya dalam beberapa tahun terakhir.
Namun begitu, 2018 justru menjadi tough year untuk urusan memilih karya-karya terbaik. Bukan tak ada, namun agaknya berjuang di tengah dominasi film horor yang memang masih sangat digemari sementara sebagian dibesut dengan kualitas rata-rata saja (ada 7 yang bertengger di deretan 14 film tadi dan hanya dua yang benar-benar ada di atas rata-rata), membuat genre selebihnya agak sulit bergerak. Belum lagi, beberapa karya high profile yang sangat diharapkan seperti Buffalo Boys dan Sultan Agung (sayangnya yang dirilis di bioskop bukan versi Hanung) ternyata melempem, sementara sejumlah film yang bagus pun belum lagi benar-benar bisa sampai ke level best picture quality. Sementara momen-momen emas untuk merilis blockbuster lokal seperti menjelang Lebaran dan akhir tahun, untuk tahun ini sedikit tercuri oleh blockbuster luar yang sedang hangat-hangatnya.
Untunglah, di sela itu, Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak yang masuk ke dalam penilaian FFI tahun ini setelah tahun lalu memenangkan film terpilih di Piala Maya, juga menjadi submisi yang cukup membanggakan pergerakannya di kampanye Oscar 2018 walau urung masuk ke dalam nominasi final untuk film berbahasa asing. Ada pula The Night Comes for Us yang menjadi world cinematic event lewat Netflix dan punya level berkelas internasional. Ke depannya, semoga ada ajang awarding yang menyediakan tempat buat konten-konten seperti ini, yang jelas tak kalah dengan film-film Indonesia yang tayang di bioskop dari sisi produksi. Lantas, Wiro Sableng yang juga bertaraf internasional dan membawa kembali genre/saduran komik silat fantasi kita. Lagi, bergerak lebih cepat dari jadwal rilisnya dengan sejumlah public screening yang disambut dengan baik, Keluarga Cemara – paling tidak sudah memberi harapan buat line up film-film Indonesia di tahun 2019.
Mari terus tak berhenti memberikan advokasi terhadap film Indonesia yang baik ke depannya nanti dengan berbagai cara yang ada, termasuk dengan tidak melewatkan film Indonesia berkualitas yang tayang di bioskop, juga antusiasme yang makin besar di sejumlah festival/event yang menyediakan jalan untuk perkembangan sinema-sinema alternatif.
So here’s my list of this year’s finest Indonesian movies, 18 judul yang walau jelas diwarnai subjektivitas, namun paling tidak dipilih berdasarkan inovasi masing-masing terhadap konsep, konten dan pencapaiannya secara keseluruhan. Sebagai catatan tambahan dari tiap judul, saya mencantumkan kembali capsule review dari akun sosmed @danieldokter atau link full review dari danieldokter.com. Semoga bisa menjadi rekomendasi buat yang belum sempat menyaksikannya di bioskop atau platform lain, dan menjadi retrospeksi yang baik buat para pencinta film Indonesia. Terus #BanggaFilmIndonesia !

Built with hearts & covered with soul, #KeluargaCemara transformed all the original essence to an updated version filled with great charm, wonderful punch. Tight script, sharp directing, strong ensemble and what a score, too. Luar biasa.
- THE NIGHT COMES FOR US
Obviously Timo’s work on another level, excessively no holds barred in every way, #TheNightComesForUs served its purpose as an extreme, brutal, crazy gore star studded-blood splatter FEST. The catfight & 1 on 1 finale are INSANE!
With star-studded ensemble, fun-hitting action & lavish look by production scale, #WiroSableng is both a legendary character’s adaptation & revival of Indonesian martial arts genre finally done right. Full respect,too. Sableng abis!
Smoothly flows beyond @adiipati @Vaneshaass ‘s captivating chemistry and a rare, subtle jazz nuance, making it the best @Rako_Prijanto ‘s work to date, #TemanTapiMenikah is one cute and adorable rom-com based on true accounts.
Shaped with style and distinct sensitivity unlike anything @andibachtiar‘s been done before, #LoveForSale took you to a sexy, atmospheric yet grounded love tale over @gadiiing & Della Dartyan’s knockout performance/chemistry.
Did what #TheRaid has done to Indonesian action genre in our local horror, #SebelumIblisMenjemput unleashed loads of Timo’s classic to gore horror refs in one solid, no-holds-barred pack of total scare-fest. Freakin’ awesome!
Might be the most delicate work from MNC Pics, Ifa Isfansyah again delivers a hilariously delightful & delicious holiday treat for the kids and family. #KokiKokiCilik dibuat pake hati, berasa sampe ke hati, dan luar biasa bikin lapar!!
- MILLY & MAMET (INI BUKAN CINTA & RANGGA)
Successfully stepped in as both an ultimate spin-off & bridge of AADC we never knew we’d have wanted, #MillyMametMovie almost fell overdramatic in the final 3rd but swiftly gets back on track to its right comedic punch. Ernest masih sakti.
So charming and delightful it’ll thoroughly leave the smile on you, #FilmRompis marks the energetic romcom direction from @montytiwa and wonderful chemistry between its leads @arbaniyasiz @dindazani @bebytsabina @umaykeren. Go see!
Not flaws-free, stood on its vintage tones of horror-comedy-love tale, #SuzzannaBernapasDalamKubur built itself a smart meta exploring details of myths & relive the icon in the amazing mirror-act by @LunaMaya26
- JELITA SEJUBA: MENCINTAI KESATRIA NEGARA
Explore the panoramic beauty and culture of Natuna with Putri Marino’s flawless performance & the rest of exquisitely natural cast, #JelitaSejuba gave a fresh approach telling the cliche military awareness story by Nayoan’s smooth directing.
A breezy, touchy-feely fantasy romance that could slide away from the genre trope w/ solid interpretation of its lyrical source, #AsalKauBahagia will easily steal your heart. @alysyarief @auroraribero & Dewa Dayana were all notable.
As gonzo as it may go, #BelokKananBarcelona seems always can find a nice romantic click to portray its high stakes, globe-trotting idea of even in love, fortune favors the bold. Thanks to the wonderful chemistry & song picks.
Surprisingly well-tackled by the look as a long-awaited big screen sequel to the series, though still spinning around in the same conflicts, #SiDoelTheMovie works in all the jokes and emotional hit. A thirst-quenching treat for the fans!
Still well-presented/acted over some look similarity to #PengabdiSetan, #Kafir just had one slight problem; loses its grip at the 2nd act while some technical flaws can be forgiven. An above average local horror overall.
Not without flaws, #ArunaDanLidahnya rolls with a wonderfully escalating chemistry beyond a crispy interacts, delicious food-fest, region-trotting road trip and 80s-90s recycled Indonesian classic pop.
Served over thin plot and almost no conflict, #Dilan1990 could still pinch smiles and for some, nostalgic feel throughout its lines. @vaneshaass delivers an irresistible performance as Milea, also a lovable chemistry w/ @iqbaale.
- EIFFEL I’M IN LOVE 2
Still depends on characters charm that no longer feels annoying like in the predecessor and also successfully transform Parisian ambience, #EiffelImInLove2 is a delightful treat to celebrate Valentine’s day and overall, love. (dan)
